Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists
in the GHS multispecialty physician practice Greenville Health System (GHS) Department of Obstectrics &
Gynecology offer the region's foremost care of at-risk mothers and
babies. Our board certified physicians provide genetic testing and
counseling, high-risk obstetric consultation, diagnostic ultrasonography
and subspecialty care to women with complications during pregnancy or
labor- cases in which the expectant mother has a health condition such
as diabetes or high blood pressure, carries multiple babies, or
experiences premature labor or other threats to the pregnancy.
Most births go as planned. When complications arise, however, the best
call available in the Upstate is at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Patients with pregnancy complications requiring extended hospitalization
receive around the clock care in our high-risk pregnancy unit by our
MFM physicians and by specially trained nurses.
Just down the hall is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of GHS
Children's Hospital, which offers the highest level neonatal intensive
care in the Upstate. From the most advanced technology- such as
specially designed ventilators essential for lung development of
premature infants- to a staff that includes dedicated nurses, therapists
and physicians in multiple pediatric subspecialties, the NICU provides
critical care to babies in distress.
Greenville Memorial Hospital is one of five hospitals in the state
designated as a Regional Perinatal Center and supports eight community
hospitals in caring for high-risk pregnancies, complicated deliveries
and babies with special needs.
Services Offered
The MFM division offers complete care for high risk pregnancies
and the most technically up-to-date diagnostic approaches to fetal
care. Our center was the first in South Carolina to be certified by the
American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. In addition to our office
in Greenville, comprehensive services for both maternal and fetal care
is offered at our office in Anderson, South Carolina.
3D/4D Ultrasound
Seven certified sonographers specially trained in prenatal ultrasound
allow us to offer the highest quality prenatal diagnosis. All of our
equipment utilizes the latest 3D/4D technology to improve detection, as
well as offer our patients a rewarding interactive experience. Four
Pediatric Cardiologists work closely with us in our Perinatal Cardiology
program, which focuses on the diagnosis and management of congenital
heart disease. In addition to ultrasound, we offer first and second
trimester genetic screening, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis,
and fetal blood sampling.
Genetic Counselors
We are fortunate to have a close working relationship with the Greenwood
Genetics Center. Three Masters level certified genetic counselors work
in our office providing information and support to families at risk for
having a child with birth defects or genetic disorders. Our counselors
help explain complex technical information about prenatal screening and
diagnosis in simple, easy to understand terms.
Minimally Invasive Techniques
For the past twelve years our division has offered minimally invasive
approaches to fetal anemia and select birth defects. In-utero
transfusions via the umbilical cord and fetal bladder shunt placement
are examples of such treatment.
Faculty
The Division consists of board certified Maternal-Fetal
Medicine specialists with a diverse spectrum of interests who trained at
some of the most respected perinatal centers in the country. These physicians are dedicated to providing the highest standard of
care to our patients.
